Consult Visits Northern Rural Communities |
Following its visit to northern inner city schools, Schools, Universities and Regions Officer Bethany Lightley took Consult Chairman Matthew Page on a visit to a northern rural constituency to talk about the issues and problems facing constituents living in these areas. During their visit, Bethany and Matthew met up with Charlotte Kelly, a rural constituent who has put forward her views on how the rural constituency and rural affairs in particular need to be given more equal attention with their urban counterparts. Charlotte outlined to the Consult delegation a number of the key issues which affect her constituency and its quality of life, including increasing bureaucracy, taxation, the closing of local services and insufficient policing. The importance of understanding the rural community and how its demographics create a whole new set of issues and challenges was at the heart of the discussion. Commenting on the visit, Schools, Universities and Regions Officer Bethany Lightley said “It was very interesting and stimulating to hear at first hand from a young, aspiring person the challenges faced by the rural constituency and the issues and challenges they pose for residents living in these areas. It is vital that our Party takes a lead in giving serious consideration to these issues in delivering innovative solutions which give real equality of opportunity to all areas, regardless of where they are situated or the political priorities of the time.” |
