Debate Gives Tyneside Young People a Voice

Wendy Morton, Conservative prospective parliamentary candidate for Tynemouth, joined forces with the Consult think tank on Saturday 24th November to discuss with young people issues relating to youth crime.

This event was the first in a series of debates being held across the country aimed at engaging the next generation of voters in politics.

Saturdays event, which was held at the Kittiwake, Whitley Bay, focussed specifically on youth crime and it's connection to alcohol and drug abuse.

Speaking at the event Consult chairman Matthew Page said:

'Whilst new and first time voters are sceptical of politicians and the political process in general, they want to be able to raise issues that concern them, such as how they will afford their first home, the fear of being a victim of anti-social behaviour, or how they will pay for their university education.'

He continued:

'This event in Tynemouth is the first in a series of debates which will hopefully encourage first time voters to get involved in policy discussion and air their views. I am delighted that this first event is on Tyneside, re-emphasising the Conservative Party's commitment to the North East.'

Guest speaker at the event, Wendy Morton said:

'I am delighted that Tynemouth secured this first Consult debate on the important topic of youth crime and it's connections with drug and alcohol and we need to be clear about the scale of the problem. Too often policy making is detached from those affected at the front line - this new format for debate will help us really engage with the issue and to make sure local young people have a voice.'
