Giving the Rural Community Equality |

Rural issues need to be properly understood and addressed if opportunities and political solutions are going to be extended to their rural communities, writes Charlotte Kelly in an exclusive article for Consult today. Charlotte, currently studying for her 'GCSEs' and living in a rural community of North Yorkshire, argues that the problems of remote public services, a lack of local police and too few housing opportunities need to be addressed in extending equality of opportunity to rural areas. However, it is an understanding of the rural community and the particular issues this raises for younger people such as isolation and a lack of meaningful engagement, which is the key to rural communities being extended the same level of attention and opportunity as their urban counterparts. In particular, local charities and organisations which provide local services aimed particularly at the local community need to be protected and supported rather than being strangled and diminished through excessive bureaucracy and over regulation. |
