Consult Invited to Contribute to |

Consult has been asked to contribute to the Heseltine Taskforce launched earlier this year by David Cameron. The remit of the group is to investigate new ways of encouraging urban regeneration in key inner cities. The Cities Taskforce is headed up by former Deputy Prime Minister Lord Heseltine. Prospective Parliamentary Candidate Christian Holliday is sitting on the review group and is heading up the work on planning, which is examining which aspects of town planning best support inner city regeneration and what aspects of the planning system need to be changed to encourage investment and make renewal in our urban areas more successful. A critical aspect of the project is to ensure that the work and final recommendations of the group relate to existing best planning practice and takes on board the policies and processes currently utilised by professionals working in this field. In the past politicians have not always carried with them the people who make our cities function when implementing reforms to city structures. The Policy review group is therefore especially interested to hear from all professionals, charity workers and councillors who are involved with planning or have experience of dealing with planning issues in urban areas. Commenting on the work being done by the group, Policy Member Christian Holliday said: "Planning has the power to make or break our urban areas. For too long all political parties have neglected inner cities, leading to crime and deprivation. We must correct this. Although planning is a major section of our work the group is also looking at other issues that affect cities, from housing and funding to life and soul issues, including enterprise and the role of charities. Our cities are very often magnets for the young, which is why it is so important that we take on board the views and experiences of young professionals in our deliberations. Please do get in touch with Consult if you feel you are able to make a contribution to the work of the taskforce." |
